William M. Wilkerson

July 18, 1921 – June 21, 2020

William Morgan Wilkerson died peacefully on the 21st of  June 2020. He was 98 years old.  Bill was born on the 18th of July 1921, in Lynchburg, VA to Walter Scott Wilkerson and Martha Carrie Childress Wilkerson.  He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, Honor League, Commercial Club, Athletic Association, and the staff of the Critic Crest.

Bill began work as a banker, took college-level classes, and was president of the local Appalachian Trail Club.  In 1947, he married Lois Vernelle Tinsley of Lynchburg, and they eventually had four children.  His career led him to the insurance industry, where he excelled.  Professional opportunities led him to move his family to various cities, including Greensboro, NC; Columbia, SC; Charlotte, NC; Baltimore, MD; Tulsa, OK; Richmond, VA; and finally back to Charlotte, where he lived for the past 46 years.  Bill opened and led insurance offices during his career and developed employee benefit programs and other insurance plans for several major companies.

Bill, Lois, and their children were active members of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church for many years, and Bill remained a lifelong member after he and Lois returned to Charlotte in 1974.  Lois was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the 1960s, and Bill spent two decades fighting to obtain the best care possible for her, including participation in trials of L-Dopa, a drug still used to treat Parkinson’s today.  Bill’s constant struggles with insurance companies, medical providers, the high cost of medical care, and treatment of those with “preexisting conditions” defined a large part of his life before and after Lois died in 1987.

Bill is survived by his dear friend, long-time companion, and caregiver, Myra Bumgarner; daughter, Marcia Wiedeman, and husband Paul ‘Spike’; son, Scott Wilkerson; son-in-law, David Larrabee; grandchildren, Paul Wiedeman, Meredith Wilkerson-Larrabee and wife Kylee, Beth Wilkerson, Jessica Wilkerson Phillips and husband Ray, Jeff Wilkerson and wife Alex, Kristin Wilkerson Gomez and husband Victor, Sasha Wilkerson and wife Caroline, Katelyn Wilkerson, and Patrick Roof; and great-grandchildren, Thomas, Peter, Patrick, and Margaret Phillips; Lucy, Rexford, and Rockford Wilkerson; and Sabine Wilkerson. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Wilkerson in 1987, his daughter Deborah Wilkerson in 2005, his son Bill Wilkerson Jr in 2007, and his daughter-in-law Sarah Wilkerson in 2018.
