Charles “Chuck” Walker

October 6, 1952 – April 18, 2020

Charles “Chuck” Walker, age 67, passed peacefully on the 18th of April, 2020, after a brave battle with cancer.

Chuck as he was affectionately known, received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Lawrence Institute of Technology and became licensed as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina.

After a twenty-year career as a Fire Protection Engineer in the insurance industry, Chuck assumed a new role as a Commercial Building Plans Examiner with Mecklenburg County. During his tenure, he earned North Carolina Inspector’s licenses for Building and Fire and was promoted to Code Enforcement Manager.

He retired in January 2020 having completed 23 years of service. Chuck held all officer positions in the Charlotte chapters of the Professional Engineers of North Carolina and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and was a lifetime member of the National Fire Protection Association.

Chuck served on the advisory boards of the Fire Protection programs at Central Piedmont Community College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was also a guest lecturer.

As devoted as Chuck was to his professional career, his greatest pleasure came from spending time with his family. From traveling to sporting events with the kids to family vacations at the beach, Chuck was always game for an adventure. He had a smile for everyone he met and was embraced by all who knew him. He touched all our lives with his kind and gentle nature.

Chuck was predeceased in death by his parents and his sister, Kathleen.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Rosemary, step-sons Brian and Ian, daughter-in-law Christiana, granddaughter Juliana Rose, siblings Colleen, Bill, and Maureen, as well as his beloved nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

A memorial service will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 concerns. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, I can’t put into words what working with and for Chuck meet to me. He gave me encouragement even when he was fighting a battle of his own and because of his encouraging words and support it gave me the confidence to take on a bigger role with the County. I will always be thankful and feel blessed that Chuck was a part of my life and he will always be apart of my life.

Goodbye Chuck,
I enjoyed working for you at MCCE in CTAC, you were a great boss, I especially enjoyed our conversations in your office about motorcycles and muscle cars. While our bodies eventually give way beneath us, we’re still young at heart.

My name is Les Ingles and I have known Chuck for over 25 years. I too am a Fire Protection Engineer and I met Chuck through the local SFPE Chapter. Chuck was a wonderful person, both professionally and personally; he always had a smile on his face and a friendly word. I will miss him; the world needs far more people like Chuck.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Rosemary,

My deepest condolences to you and your family. I had the pleasure of working with Chuck at Mecklenburg County LUESA Code Enforcement. Chuck was a special person who was always kind, positive, warm and easy to talk with. In our many conversations, it was clear he had a deep love for his “Rosie” and family. I will miss Chuck tremendously and I am grateful to have known him. May God give you and your family comfort and peace during this difficult time.

I am sorry for your family’s loss. I will say a prayer for Chuck and your family tonight.

I would like to tell you about the first time I met Chuck. He was working for IRI (I think) in Charlotte. I traveled from Columbia, SC to see the fire protection lab they had in hopes of replicating something like it for the SC Fire Academy. I was a very young engineer who worked for the SC Fire Marshal’s office. Chuck was very cordial and VERY patient answering questions about sprinkler systems and NFPA standards. In the 15 minute I was sitting with him, I learned more about sprinkler systems I had in the three years I had worked for the SC State Fire Marshal’s Office. It is perhaps my favorite mentoring session I’ve had in my 30 years in the industry.

I always enjoyed seeing him at the monthly SFPE meetings because he always greeted me by name and asked about my latest projects. I never had the opportunity to work with him during his tenure with Mecklenburg County, but I always heard nice things from the people who did work with him.

God Bless your Family.

With deepest sympathy to Chuck’s family. I am sure he will be missed just as he is here at Code Enforcement. When I first started as a fire plans examiner Chuck had an office across from my cubicle and was always there to lend his knowledge when I had an question on a fire or building code. I was amazed at his knowledge of fire protection and then found out he was a fire protection engineer and it all made sense as to why he took me ‘under his wing’ to help me whenever there issues I didn’t quite have the answer to. Of course there were other chats that lasted longer about family and other topics which only made him a good work friend. You will be surely missed by all of us you touched!

“What do you know today?” Was Something chuck would say every morning I saw him, He was wonderful man his kind smile was uplifting. He always had time for his coworkers. I didn’t work with him as long as some but feel privileged to have known him at all. Anytime I would ask him a question it would always turn into a thesis. A 5 dollar question would receive a million dollar answer.
We will miss you Chuck. I am so very sorry Rosemary I cannot imagine what you are felling. My condolences to your family.
Peace I leave with you, My Peace I give unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

I’ll always remember Chuck as a great guy. We had several years together in work and some opportunities to socialize. We traveled together to several conferences.

His graciousness, positive attitude and work ethic were an excellent example to me and others around him.

He was a great family man, always sharing family happenings with me. He really loved you guys and was proud of you all.

We will miss him in our lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. May God grant you comfort and peace in the days to come.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Chuck. He was a great professional friend. I knew Chuck for many years dating back to our insurance days and SFPE. We shared a position on the CPCC advisory committee together for many years. He was true professional and had a passion for fire protection and life safety. I pray that his family sees this time as an opportunity of reflection and celebration of Chuck’s life, the work he did for the betterment of society, and the people he touched and influenced from both a friendship and professional perspective. I being one of those people. May he Rest In Peace.

Rosemary and family. As you know Chuck and I (Mark) spent a fair bit of time over the years watching Brian and Ian grow from boys to young men as they raced together with my son, Gregg. Chuck is and will always be a part of those fond memories and I am eternally grateful for his and all of your friendship and for the opportunity to have raised our boys together in this way. Our last gathering together around the fire talking was special and it’s something I won’t soon forget. Our family’s hearts and prayers are with yours and we extend our deepest sympathy and love during this time. Chuck was special to us as we know he was special to all of you and we will miss him. Grace and peace be yours.

The Nuccio’s welcomed Chuck into our family and we loved him as a sibling. Along with everyone else in our family, he was an equal “victim” of our good-natured kidding and, I might add, in his own gentle way, a participant.  I imagine his first words as a child could have been, “What can I do?”, as the sidelines were unfamiliar territory to Chuck. A loving and unselfish husband and father, a truly wonderful brother and uncle, while his light is now a star among the Heavens, his radiance lives forever in our hearts.  Thank you Walker family in Charlotte and in Michigan for sharing Chuck with us.    ..Jim and Jo..

I don’t think I ever saw him appear to be in a sour mood! It was an honor to know and work with him and he will be greatly missed at Mecklenburg County.
