Althea Johnson Rowe

May 7, 1956 – August 22, 2020

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Althea Johnson Rowe, also known as “Tio” to her family and closest friends, on the afternoon of August 22, 2020. She passed surrounded by her loving family, after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.

Althea was born in Newark, New Jersey on the 7th of May, 1956, the daughter of Paul and Martha Johnson.

Althea spent her early years in New Jersey, where she later attended Rutgers University and also enjoyed living in California and New York before settling in North Carolina. Althea always displayed a zest for life. She loved to sing and dance, and could often be found doing both around her home. She enjoyed dining out, as she was passionate about good food, and going to the movies. An avid reader, she could usually be found snuggled up with a good book at home. She has also loved her fur babies over the years, cats Sophie and Ami, and boxers Max and Tiberius.

Althea was always drawn to water and loved to be on a beach anywhere, be it St. Martin in the Caribbean or on Singer Island in Florida. Above all, Althea was a Godly, loving wife and mother who was the backbone and heart of her family.

Preceding Althea in death is her father, Paul Johnson, and her brothers: Gordon, Darrell, and Paul Johnson.

Althea is survived by her adoring husband, Lorenz, and two beautiful daughters, Adrienne and Jasmine. She is also survived by her mother, Martha, her sister, Pat, and her brother, Don; along with a host of beloved family members and friends who will deeply miss her vibrant spirit.

Services will be announced at a later date.

We never had the privelege to spend much time with Althea but she treated us as close long time friends. She had that way about her.She always seemed upbeat and had a positive attitude even in the midst of her pain and suffering. She was one of the strongest persons I ever met to go through what she did with a positive spirit. It is easy to see why Lorenz was attracted to and married her. She could lift anyone up.She was as fortunate to have Lorenz as he was to have her.He loved her with his whole being and spent every waking hour supporting and loving her while getting her the best care possible. 1 Corinthians 15 :42-44 The body is sown perishable it is raised imperishable, it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory,it is sown in weakness,it is raised in power, it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.May we bless others as she did.

Althea was the most joyful, courageous, spiritual and peaceful warrior that we’ve had the honor to be friends with for the past 25 years.
During that span of time, we have created a wealth of memories to warm our hearts, lift our spirits and put a smile on our faces.
Rest now, dear friend.

Althea had a strong regal presence. She was a ray of sunshine, a sunflower, a cool breeze on a hot day. She had a welcoming presence that made you feel comfortable and happy. Her laughter was infectious and I always had a good time whether we were working , traveling, or dining. She will be sorely missed.

My favorite memory of Althea was going with her and my mother to an Earth, Wind &Fire concert at the blockbuster pavilion, (well, that was the name of it back in the day, I’m pretty sure it’s changed names multiple times by now). We sang along to every song so loudly and danced like no one was watching. I giggle even now at that memory and marvel at how Althea’s personality was such a gift! She was ALWAYS the life of the party, forever with a smile on her face, ready with a hilarious anecdote, all while being the most sincere and genuine friend, (my mother’s best friend). My sister and I considered her to be our “Auntie”, and the beauty of Althea’s soul shone so brightly through her beloved family. I feel so honored to know her and Lorenz and their two gorgeous daughters Jasmine and Adrienne. Our families have been close for as long as I can remember and my heart breaks to think that I can’t see her again in this world. She fought so bravely and I know she’s shining down on us from heaven. Sending so much love from Portland, OR.

To say I am extremely heartbroken is putting it mildly. Althea was a true, devoted and special friend for 24 years. She and her family were and are the best neighbors. Althea was just an extremely beautiful person inside and out and I will miss her more than mere words can express. She was a unique, intelligent and beautiful human being and she always exhibited compassion, empathy and great love and devotion to her husband Lorenz, and their beautiful girls, Adrienne and Jasmine, as well as to her family and friends. I am thankful for the special times we spent together. Dear Family please accept my love and heartfelt condolences. I am sad. Love, Donna
